Seawater-Resistant Labels Compliant with BS 5609
Reliable Marking for Marine Chemical Transport
Transporting chemicals and hazardous materials by sea requires labels that endure extreme environmental stress.
A key criterion of the international British Standard 5609 (BS 5609) is that safety and hazard markings must remain legible and firmly attached even after a three-month immersion in seawater.
BS 5609 is recognized globally as the benchmark for label durability in marine environments and is mandatory under the International Maritime Dangerous Goods (IMDG) Code.
Förster Labels provides certified combinations of facestocks and high-tack marine adhesives engineered for these demanding environments.

White and Silver Base Materials – Flexibly Printable

For seawater-resistant labeling, Förster offers diverse white and silver synthetic materials.
Depending on your operational volume and requirements, these can be printed via:

  • High-resolution CMYK digital printing for multi-color hazard pictograms
  • Conventional high-speed flexographic printing
  • In-house thermal transfer printing (TTR) for variable batch data

For thermal transfer imprinting, we supply matched black or red TTR resin ribbons certified to BS 5609 Section 3 standards, ensuring that imprinted variable data survives marine transit without fading or dissolving.

BS 5609 Section 2 & Section 3 Compliance

BS 5609 certification is split into two rigorous testing phases:

  • BS 5609 Section 2 (Base Material & Adhesive): Tests the unprinted adhesive substrate for marine immersion (3 months in saltwater), artificial weathering (salt spray and sunlight), and extreme temperature cycling.
  • BS 5609 Section 3 (Print Key & Legibility): Tests the durability of the printed ink and ribbon against marine immersion, continuous abrasion with sand slurry, and intense UV radiation.

Förster provides fully certified Section 2 and Section 3 compliant label systems for chemical drums, IBCs, and hazardous transport containers.

Engineered for Drums, IBCs and Marine Containers

Chemical transport containers (steel drums, polyethylene containers, IBCs) feature curved surfaces and low-surface-energy plastics.
Our specialized high-coat-weight marine adhesives provide aggressive initial tack and permanent bonding that resists salt spray, wave wash, wind, and severe temperature changes from polar to tropical climates.
FÖRSTER – Certified safety for international marine logistics.
