UL-Recognized Printing Materials for Industrial Identification

Within the certification category Marking and Labeling Systems – Printing Materials, UL Solutions classifies materials under PGJI2 for the US market and PGJI8 for Canada. Our recognized printing systems are certified under UL File No. MH45157.

PGJI Printing Materials are engineered for blank or partially pre-printed label stocks intended to receive on-demand imprinting by the equipment manufacturer before application to the final product.

Typical variable data imprinted in-house includes:

  • Serial numbers and manufacturing batch codes
  • Electrical ratings, voltage, wattage, and operating parameters
  • Model numbers and product type designations
  • 1D linear barcodes (Code 128, etc.)
  • 2D DataMatrix and QR codes
  • Dynamic technical specifications

For secondary imprinting, only the printing technologies, compatible thermal transfer ribbons, and materials specified within the respective UL recognition may be deployed.

PGJI2 and PGJI8 – USA and Canada

PGJI2 – USA: Marking and Labeling Systems – Printing Materials according to ANSI/UL 969

PGJI8 – Canada: Marking and Labeling Systems – Printing Materials according to CSA C22.2 No. 0.15

This distinguishes between the regulatory testing standards of the US and Canadian markets.

Concrete material suitability is always governed by the specific material system, imprinting method, ribbon formulation, and operating conditions defined in the UL certificate.

Typical Applications

PGJI Printing Materials are ideal for:

  • Technical product identification and rating plates
  • Type and performance rating labels
  • Serial numbering and component identification
  • Barcode, QR, and DataMatrix asset tracking
  • Variable production batch and lot tracking
  • Electrical appliances and electronic assemblies
  • Industrial machinery and commercial components
  • Markings individualized directly on the client's manufacturing line

Materials and Construction

Depending on application, various material constructions are available:

  • White polyester (gloss or matte finish)
  • Silver matte polyester (metallic nameplate appearance)
  • Ultra-clear transparent films
  • High-tack acrylic adhesive systems for smooth, textured, or curved surfaces
  • Optional protective over-laminates

Selection is determined by substrate surface energy, operating temperature range, mechanical scuffing, chemical exposure, and the designated thermal transfer printer.

Important Considerations for PGJI Printing Materials

UL recognition always applies strictly to the tested, matched system. The following parameters must be aligned:

  • Base substrate material
  • Adhesive formulation
  • Printing technology (thermal transfer)
  • Printing ink / thermal transfer ribbon model
  • Application surface (metal, plastic, powder coat)
  • Operational temperature range
  • Conditions of Acceptability (CoA)

Not every printer ribbon is automatically approved for every PGJI substrate.

We assist you in selecting and certifying the exact matched combination of label stock and ribbon for trouble-free UL audit acceptance.
